Poetic Justice: Peacebuilding + Community Repair Through Poetry
Current Status: Underway
Poetic Justice Informational Overview
Poetic Justice is an innovative program designed to empower individuals as social leaders by harnessing the transformative power of poetry. At its core, this initiative uses creative expression as a tool for personal recovery, community connection, and leadership development.
Self-Actualization Through Poetry
Through the act of writing, participants process complex emotions and experiences, situating their personal narratives within a broader context. Poetry becomes a bridge between past and future selves, fostering cognitive and psychological growth. Participants cultivate protective factors and a sense of identity deeply rooted in their community, developing the skills to inspire others by using asset-based frameworks to address local challenges.
Uplifting Participants
Poetic Justice provides a wide range of benefits, including:
Skill Development: Writing, close reading, analysis, communication, public speaking, self-expression, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Mental Health Support: Creative outlets for personal expression that foster resilience and healing. Writing poetry, much like journaling, serves as a pathway for self-reflection and recovery, allowing participants to honor their challenges and accomplishments.
Leadership Transformation: The program reshapes self-perception, empowering individuals to see themselves as leaders. Participants gain confidence in their voice and perspective, learning how to inspire and mobilize others.
Building Connected Communities
Through poetry, Poetic Justice bridges divides, helping diverse audiences discover common ground. Peer responses foster analytical and communication skills while deepening interpersonal understanding. By contributing to a published anthology, participants become creators of a collective narrative—an act of community-building that models humanizing approaches to personal recovery and social repair.
This process equips participants with the tools to lead and implement community repair practices, creating a ripple effect of connection, resilience, and hope. With Poetic Justice, poetry is not only a means of self-expression but a powerful catalyst for social change.
Currently, Poetic Justice is being offered at Dove Recovery House for Women, where it provides a supportive space for women to reflect, grow, and reclaim their voices. Discussions are also underway with Marion County Community Corrections to expand the program, bringing its impact to individuals navigating reentry and rehabilitation. Through poetry, Poetic Justice transforms individual and collective narratives, nurturing hope and inspiring peacebuilding from within.
